V.P. of Recruitment's Message

  • Brother HollowayHello and welcome to the Recruitment page of our website, where you'll be able to find out everything you need to know about Delta Upsilon's Recruitment Process. But firstly, let me tell you how enthused I am that you've taken the time to look into Greek Life here at NC State. Our thriving Greek community has a lot to offer, and I can tell you from personal experience that choosing the right fraternity is no trivial task. So, in order for you to make an educated choice about Delta Upsilon, I'd like to tell you a bit more about the experience of pledging the North Carolina State Chapter.

Right off the bat, I'll be completely honest with you when I say we do not haze in any form. I didn't experience any of it personally, nor have I ever witnessed it myself in our Chapter. In fact, there's a saying with Delta Upsilon, "We won't make you do anything you wouldn't mind telling your grandmother about," no matter how strict and conservative she may be. What you do on your own time is a different story, but we'll never force you to do something (demeaning or not) for acceptance.

The next point I'd like to hit on is our non-secret policy. If you haven't explored the rest of our website yet, you might not be familiar with what I'm going on about. Because we consider ourselves "non-secret," we can freely share every aspect of our fraternal operations and therefore every belief and value we possess is open to the public view. I like to think that Delta Upsilon's transparency removes a lot of unnecessary "secret-keeping." This, in turn, frees up time and effort to be used to make our fraternity experience that much better. While other fraternities will keep their rituals and practices a mystery to you as a recruit/rushee, only revealing them to you in their entirety after you have been fully initiated, with Delta U, you'll know up front exactly what you can expect. We believe it makes our recruitment/rush process a little more informed. Want to know the details of our Member Education program? Just ask. Want to know how exactly your initiation ceremony will be held? Just ask. Any aspect of our inner workings is available to you - all you have to do is ask.

Now, don't get me wrong - you might think, and understandably so, that the words secrecy and fraternity go hand-in-hand, and you would be correct. Merriam Webster's defines a fraternity as

"1: a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest, or pleasure: as c. a men's student organization formed chiefly for social purposes having secret rites and a name consisting of Greek letters."

That's all well and good, but since Delta Upsilon is an organization of social purposes without secret rites, we, as a fraternity, can focus more on the second definition,

"2: the quality or state of being brothers: brotherhood."

By stripping away needless secrecy, by striving for an updated stance on fraternal life, we can bring you brotherhood, the means to meet new people and make lifelong friends, the strength and confidence you'll need to take on the rest of your life, and all the fun you want to have in your college career in a hassle-free, laid back atmosphere. And isn't that all you want from a fraternity in the first place? The choice is yours: a relaxed fraternity experience or a stuffy secret one. And I can assuredly say that an excellent answer to that choice - is to Pledge Delta Upsilon. I'd like to thank you for your time and your interest and I look forward to meeting you personally at one of our upcoming Recruitment events.

    Fraternally yours,

    W. Garrett Holloway
